Craigslist Austin, a popular online platform for free classified advertisements, is proposing a $25 fee for posting an open position on its job listings website in Sacramento and three other metro areas.

According to Jim Buckmaster, president and chief executive officer of Craigslist, the company presently collects fees in seven of the 450 locations with Web sites.

The company, which was created in 1998, began charging a $25 fee to residents of San Francisco in 1998, and then expanded to Los Angeles and New York in 2004. In Boston, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., the corporation has raised fees. The cost in San Francisco has jumped to $85 and is still $25 in the other six cities.

Craigslist Companies seeking for staff in Sacramento, Orange County, Chicago, and Portland, Ore. would be charged $25, according to Austin. Other classified ads from the company, such as lodging, commodities, services, and even events, would be unaffected.

Sacramento is one of the most popular websites, having been created in October 2000. Sacramento is ranked 13th in the number of page views. According to Buckmaster, Sacramento is ranked sixth in terms of page views per person.

After getting complaints from customers about the quality of job listings on one particular website, Craigslist proposed the fee.

“When we start receiving complaints from people and requests for a price, that’s a significant part of it,” Buckmaster explained.

He also stated that get-rich-quick schemes, multilevel marketing, and “a variety of things that appear to be job ads but aren’t” are not often found on job boards or paid websites.

Customers have told officials at the company that those with paid job boards operate better for both job searchers and employers after the company began charging for job adverts in other cities. At initially, the quantity of job postings dropped considerably when the fees were implemented. According to Craigslist, they immediately tripled and doubled.

Buckmaster noted that the free service had some disadvantages. Employers will be more likely to post ads in a variety of categories if it’s free, making it more difficult for job searchers, according to Buckmaster.

The price may also reduce the need for firms to reprint job adverts, according to the company. The most current commercials are at the top of the list, with the oldest adverts towards the bottom. As a result, the more advertisements received, the further down the list they are pushed, encouraging employers to remove advertisements.

Furthermore, a $25 cost is only a tenth or less of what employment portals like Monster and CareerBuilder charge, “even if the visibility arguably is greater,” according to Buckmaster. The Sacramento Bee and 30 other daily newspapers are published by The McClatchy Co., which is also a partner in CareerBuilder.

PERSPECTIVE FROM THE NEWSPAPER

Classified ads are usually more expensive in newspapers. Because of these adverts, they have lost money from internet marketers.

McClatchy, a daily based in Sacramento, for example, is seeing a reduction in ad revenue, which accounts for 85 percent of the newspaper’s total revenue. Around 30% of McClatchy’s revenue comes from classified advertising.

According to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, McClatchy’s classified advertising, which includes job postings, has decreased since the third quarter of 2006. Without taking into account the company’s acquisition of twenty Knight-Ridder magazines in 2000, the number of classified advertising fell by $23 million, or nearly 11%, from the beginning of 2006 to the first three months. Similarly, revenue from employment advertisements fell by $6 million, or 8%.

Newspapers, according to Buckmaster, would rather that craigslist austin charge more fees because competing with the free service is difficult. He couldn’t see how craigslist’s idea to charge a fee for job postings would damage newspapers, as they cater to businesses that can afford to pay more.

“Newspapers, in terms of job posts, have been affected more, in our opinion, by companies like Monster, who are furiously competing for Fortune 500 corporations,” according to the ad, which pay between $500 and $1,000 for ads.

In an email, Ellen Hume, a media analyst at the University of Massachusetts’ Center for Media and Society in Boston, Massachusetts, said that Craigslist Australia done a “great” job marketing itself as a wholly free alternative to classified advertisements in newspapers.

Because it’s now the go-to site for a variety of companies or job hopefuls, collecting a fee could boost craigslist’s reputation in the media industry, she noted. Craigslist offers most classified advertisements for free, with the exception of jobs.

Despite rising employment costs, Hume believes Craigslist will remain more tempting than newspaper classifieds.

“As a result, Craigslist is likely to eat the newspapers’ lunch even if it charges for the same services,” she said.

SEEKERS OF WORK SPEAK UP

Assume that craigslist is ever asked to charge a fee for job postings. In this scenario, the corporation offers a discussion forum on a dedicated website where users can provide feedback.

Buckmaster claimed that discussion forums had been up for a year, and in some cases three years, before corporate managers analysed the feedback and made an informed decision on setting a price.

The discussion boards in Sacramento went up in March.

Mark Ryan Pavlicek of Portland recently joined the conversation and stated that fees could harm small firms.

“I understand the value of having a fee for those of us seeking higher-salaried jobs run by corporations,” the writer wrote on his blog on May 29. “However, there are a lot of people who work in the service industry, retail, or customer service-related positions who rely on craigslist for employment.” “Many small businesses will be discouraged from posting on Craigslist Austin because they will not be able to afford the cost.”

Those who are actively looking for work tend to go for jobs on craigslist austin than rely on finding a sign in the storefront windows, according to Pavlicek. While Buckmaster stated that mom-and-pop stores are more likely to display an advertisement for help in the windows rather than posting an advertisement on the internet, Pavlicek reached in Portland and stated that those who are actively looking for work tend to go for jobs on craigslist

Small employers, on the other hand, consider it a fair price not to have their official job ads surrounded by non-legitimate advertisements, according to Buckmaster.

“We get the impression that small businesses don’t find the fee burdensome,” he continued.

Kelly Arbor of Auburn is looking for work in the field of education. She was emphatic about the $25 fee, claiming that it would have no negative impact on her job prospects.

“I believe Sacramento is strong enough,” she continued. “There are many excellent, legitimate postings. “I believe that the majority of people looking for work are willing to pay $25.”

Arbor feels the price will deter unscrupulous artists from causing havoc on the employment board.

She described Craigslist as “sort of like the wild, wild West.” “I believe that those of us who use it frequently would prefer it to be a little more civilised….” In certain ways, I believe it has a poor reputation.”

The rates appeal to Dave Cox, a recruiter with GraphXStaff in Sacramento.

“I agree with the charge,” he continued, “albeit it may not be the majority opinion among recruiters.” It would do rid of all the “junk,” he added. Some people who make comments on discussion boards claiming that the fees will help companies recruit suitable workers are not his fans. He believes he will continue to discover plenty of unqualified candidates. However, he said that it might help job hunters because there would be fewer ads to sort through.

If Craigslist charges $25 per post, Cox wants a guarantee that the ad will stay up for at least 30 days. He also mentioned that Craigslist advertising might be “flagged” by other users and removed. He claims that in a competitive market, credible adverts are likely to get flagged.

While Hilary Thompson of Santa Cruz is looking for a job with a nonprofit organisation in Sacramento, she is concerned that the expenditures are too high for nonprofits.

“I think (the fees) are helpful in that they’ll stop a lot of the spamming and bogus ads that are going on,” Thompson said. “However, I believe they should look at the city’s marketplace and provide some sort of discount for organisations.”

According to the organisation, craigslist austin can receive more than 12 million classified advertisements and 750,000 new job listings each month.
